History

The establishment of the Travellers Lodge in the City of Chester was the outcome of a grievance long felt among Commercial Travellers who were members of the Craft, as well as those of the same profession who desired to become Freemasons, being invariably “on the road” when the three Lodges already established in Chester held their meetings. A movement in favour of a “Saturday” Lodge was first considered in 1893 and again in 1896 when a decision was made to apply for a Charter for a Lodge called Travellers Lodge. The Lodge of Independence furnished the founders of the Lodge and, with the valuable support of the Cestrian and Clarence Lodges, and the petition for a Charter was granted in April 1896. On the 30th May 1896the Lodge was consecrated by the Grand Secretary of England with the first regular meeting of the being held at the Masonic Hall, Queen Street on the 27th June 1896. Along with another three Lodges Travellers was involved in the purchase of the building at Hunter Street for use as an additional Masonic Hall in Chester.
